Scientific Sessions

1. Emerging Microbes & Infection

The microbial world is complex, dynamic, and constantly emerging. Infection causing organisms reproduce rapidly, mutate frequently and adapt with relative ease to their new surroundings. Because of these characteristics, infectious organisms are able to alter their epidemiology, their virulence, and their susceptibility to anti-infective drugs. All forms of infectious organisms—bacteria, viruses, parasites, and prions are able to emerge or re-emerge in human populations, and it is estimated that up to 70 per cent or more of all emerging infections have a source in animals.

2.  Microbial Genomics & Genome Sequencing

The molecular mechanisms of infectious disease and identify potential therapeutic and diagnostic targets by exploiting next-generation genomic data. It focuses on the comparative analysis of genomes obtained from local clinical isolates of important human pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococci, Streptococci, Legionella pneumophila and Acinetobacter baumannii and many other microorganisms.

3. Microbial Biofilms

Biofilms are the default mode-of-life for many bacterial species. The variety of microniches provided by the biofilm also promotes a huge diversity of microbial life and metabolic potential. These complex and highly structured communities help to maintain the health of soils and waters. Current applications of biofilms include the degradation of toxic substances in soil and water, the commercial production of chemicals, and the generation of electricity. Biofilm-based infections causes harm to millions of humans annually. In addition, biofilms can affect the quality and yield of crops and cause biofouling and microbial-induced corrosion.

4. Infection Control & Prevention

Infection control is the discipline concerned with preventing nosocomial  or healthcare-associated infection, a practical sub-discipline of epidemiology. It is an essential, though often under recognized and under supported, part of the infrastructure of health care. Infection control and hospital epidemiology are akin to public health practice, practiced within the confines of a particular health-care delivery system rather than directed at society as a whole. Anti-infective agents include antibiotics, antibacterials, antifungals, antivirals and antiprotozoals.

5. Immunology of Infections

Immunology is the study of the immune system and is a very important branch of the medical and biological sciences, that deals with the response of an organism to antigenic challenge and its recognition of what is self and what is not. It deals with the defence mechanisms including all physical, chemical and biological properties of the organism that help it to combat its susceptibility to foreign organisms, material, etc.

6. Clinical & Infectious Disease Pathology

Clinical pathology covers a wide range of laboratory functions and is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Clinical pathology also involves maintenance of information systems, research, and quality control.
Infectious diseases pathology involves the Clinical pathology of the diagnosis of disease through the analysis of bodily fluids viz., blood and urine, or tissues, through the application of clinical microbiology, haematology and molecular pathology. It consists of Hematopathology  Immunopathology and Radiation Pathology. Includes the study of blood cells, lymph nodes, bone marrow, immune system and other bodily functions.

7. Multiple Organ Pathology

The pathological observation of the multiple organ ( like skin, renal, GI etc) and related components, are included in the field of Multiple organ pathology. Dermatopathology one of the most important speciality in the anatomic pathology focuses on the skin and the diseases, that affect the skin and then proceeds attacking other organs. Gynecologic pathology deals with the study, manifestation and diagnosis of the diseases in the female genital tract and breasts .The gastrointestinal (GI) pathology determines quality diagnostic histopathology on gastrointestinal endoscopic biopsies and resections of the gastrointestinal and pancreatico -biliary systems. Pulmonary pathology deals with the neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. While Renal pathology is mostly dealt with in during transplants and other kidney diseases. The nervous system and related components, for autopsy or biopsies are included in the field of Neuropathology.

8. Surgical Pathology

Surgical pathology is the crux of pathological examination for most pathologists, as it involves the microscopic examination of surgical specimens and biopsy samples through macroscopic, or histologic or microscopic examination or through the immune histochemical tests of the samples.

9. Forensic Pathology & Digital Pathology

The crux of Forensic pathology is not only on autopsies of the corpse, but it also helps in finding of the clues at the crime scenes and is useful in criminal examinations. Toxicology and Pharmacology are 2 of the most essential units in Forensic pathology. Digital pathology is a recent addition to the field of pathology, wherein the diagnosis of the infections and also the analysis of the specimen is done digitally through pre-fed data to the systems.

10. Transfusion Medicine

Transfusion medicine is the branch of medicine that is concerned with transfusion of blood and blood components. It encompasses issues of blood donation, immunohematology and other laboratory testing, transfusion practices, therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collections, cellular therapy, and coagulation. Laboratory management and understanding of state and federal regulations related to blood products are also a large part of the field.
